As most music fans know, Taylor Swift is not only performing on the GRAMMY Awards this weekend–she’s opening the show.
Which, as she told Lisa Dent and Ramblin’ Ray of Chicago’s US99.5 during an interview this week, is “an insane thing to get to do.” Sure she’s prepared, but as she says, she’s “trying to not freak out” and “not feel the overwhelming pressure” that comes with being scheduled in such a prestigious spot.
Taylor Swift reveals some of her favorites among this year’s GRAMMY nominees
It’s no surprise that Taylor was tapped to perform in that prestigious opening spot. After all, her latest album Red has sold over 5 million copies so far worldwide (the most for any album released in 2012). And it’s already spawned several hit singles: the inescapably catchy “We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together”; the gentler, more introspective “Begin Again” (currently high on the country charts); and the bold, pop-produced “I Knew You Were Trouble” (which has topped the pop charts three weeks in a row already).
This is on top of “Safe and Sound,” her GRAMMY-nominated song with the Civil Wars, which was featured in The Hunger Games.
So with all these new songs at hand, which will she perform during the GRAMMYs? Or will she pull something entirely new and different out of her hat?
“One thing I have learned about performing on the GRAMMYs,” says Taylor, “is I think people want to hear the song that’s nominated. I’m very lucky to be [in the running for] Record of the Year, so why not play the song that’s been nominated for Record of the Year?”
That would of course mean she’s going to play “Never Ever,” which is nominated for that very honor at this year’s GRAMMYs (additional nominees in this category are Kelly Clarkson, Frank Ocean, fun., Gotye, and the Black Keys).
