Born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, Kix Brooks was able to experience country music for the first time through his neighbor Johnny Horton. Johnny’s daughter and Brooks were able to share their love for music since they were young, and throughout high school he earned his take through playing in clubs and writing his own music. After high school he then worked on an oil pipeline with his father in Alsaka, soon after he moved to Maine where he started singing and performing again for multiple venues even including a ski resort in the town. Wanting to further his career in music he decided to make the move to Nashville, obtaining a job as a songwriter for Tree Publishing, his songs were performed by artists such as, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Highway 101, and John Conlee.
Taking a leap of faith, Brooks recorded his first single in 1983 called, “Baby, When Your Heart Breaks Down.” The song did not have that much popularity forcing him to go back to songwriting. He would soon try recording again soon, however the album did not do what he expected again. He finally found stardom being a part of a top hits country duo, Brooks & Dunn. Having numerous hits with their group, in 2009 the group announced their split after 20 years.
